The most important thing you can do to set yourself up for a Capsim win is to read the student guidebook

Read the Capsim Student Guide Book thoroughly! In fact, read it twice before starting anything else.

We have 3 guidebooks and a competitive analysis worksheet that we recommend you read.

Refer to them often. Most of the knowledge you need to succeed in Capsim is contained in these guides. It is worthwhile to print the guides so that you can refer to them when you are formulating decisions.
The online guide is also very helpful and there are video guides in the online guide book.

The competitive analysis is a crucial piece of your resources. Do the analysis EVERY ROUND!

IF YOU DON'T HAVE A STRATEGY, YOU'LL BECOME PART OF SOMEONE ELSE'S STRATEGY

Wayne Gretzky once said, "I SKATE TO WHERE THE PUCK IS GOING TO BE, NOT WHERE IT HAS BEEN." This applies to your strategy in Capsim too. Since nearly all your decisions will be based on your basic strategy, choose one BEFORE you start. Otherwise, you are merely reacting to other teams strategies and probably won't beat them.
